The renovation and expansion of the $16.2 million Armstrong Gymnasium Events Center officially began at Chadron State College in April, 2013. The resulting new facilities were dubbed the Chicoine Center after Vernon P. Chicoine, a businessman, rancher, civic leader, investor and philanthropist who lived in Chadron for 66 years.

The roughly 6,250 square foot room which formerly housed a natatorium was converted into a strength and conditioning center, which includes 16 platforms, seven double racks and two half racks, a small cardiovascular and recovery space and a free weight exercise area. The weight room also features a 5-yard by 28-yard turf area alongside the east wall for conditioning, stretching, drills and footwork.

The arena was completed in the winter of 2014 and opened for the 2014-15 men's and women's basketball seasons.

The horseshoe-shaped arena, which runs east to west, seats 1,750 spectators on the north, south and west sides. The public entrance is located at the mezzanine level on the southwestern corner of the arena and the gates into the stands line the top of the seating area above the gymnasium floor. More than 600 of the seats have collapsible backs to them.

Six basketball goals are affixed to the roughly 35-foot ceiling, so the court can be split into two 84-foot competition spaces for high school games.

The Chicoine Center opened Nov. 5, 2014.
